The principals of Calsun are Phil Caldwell and Vince Sunter, degree mechanical engineers with extensive experience in mining and medium - heavy industry. They have worked together for more than two decades and have developed extremely practical robust technical and business systems. They are each capable multi-discipline project managers who have been taking the lead role in major projects for a combined period in excess of 60 years, developing a very strong project culture and using their complementary strengths to routinely satisfy all stakeholder requirements. No lost time accidents have occurred on any project under their control.
Calsun's excellence in Project Management was recognised at the 2003 Australian Institute of Project Management Achievement Awards night when Calsun was selected as one of the eight NSW Finalists in front of over a hundred other project managers and leading NSW companies. Our combined skills and experience allows us to tackle extremely innovative solutions and reliably roll out highly technical systems in any industry, typically in complex environments.
The original Company was formed by Phil Caldwell in 1989 to perform general coal industry engineering and project work before that Company expanded into highwall and underground development mining and mining equipment support. In 1997 Calsun was formed by the current principals to focus on the performance of engineering project work, with some specialist engineering and operational / maintenance services also being provided. Our general driving philosophy is to bring work preferably to the Newcastle area or other Australian local communities that support local mining.
A typically informal joint venture / partnering style of project delivery is provided through the vehicle of Calsun Projects Pty Ltd (established after a business upgrade reconfiguration in early 2009), or other entity as may be appropriate for the specific circumstances. In this way the client gets the benefit of the best available suppliers for the particular skills, equipment and services required, but without the excessive mark-ups and overheads of typical project companies, or the issues of dealing with multiple entities.
In 2013 Calsun commenced an innovative business development growth phase to implement Calsun's patented beneficiation plant step change throughput increase technology, initially in coal and progressively through iron ore and a range of other minerals; In mid 2014 Calsun also commenced development of clean coal technology applications and implementation models, utilising separately patented technology.
What we do
Calsun provides viable economical solutions for materials handling and processing applications, which can include refurbished second hand equipment to reduce cost. The FUNDAMENTAL emphasis is on reliably and efficiently achieving solid, high value outcomes to get genuine win-win outcomes for all. Not just a catchphrase, but real, concrete, practical mechanisms that generate worthwhile results and reward true performance. We are about getting great results for our clients, not generating excuses for "selling hours" or generating turnover for its own sake.
Core expertise is in the coal mining industry but with considerable experience in steel, various mineral ores, aluminium, grain, glass, rail and transport industries. A track record of executing projects safely, economically and efficiently is assisted by effective computer based project control and risk management systems developed to ensure the delivery of all works on time and budget with a "no surprises" philosophy.
Due to the high performance of a range of significant projects, excellent commercial relationships are in place with many key industry suppliers. These allow Calsun to securely undertake large projects on a fast track basis and ensure the timely delivery of equipment and full back-up support as needed. Calsun is able to easily perform multi-disciplinary turnkey project work to $100M including all investigative engineering, design, earthworks, civils, mechanicals, structurals, sitework, electricals and commissioning. We have also set up, operated and / or advised several $/t or $/service style of service contracts and have a deep understanding of the critical success factors.
Funding is readily secured to execute larger projects and considerable experience entering into Joint Venture (JV) arrangements with large public Companies exists for very large infrastructure development projects where appropriate. In past projects, multiple formal JV's have been entered into with Thiess and Transfield, and informal ones with Brambles. Calsun brings a lot of depth and maturity to any JV or partnering arrangement to ensure they will always achieve successful outcomes.
Project work undertaken includes reclaim and stacker systems, truck & rail loading / receival systems, coal preparation plant modification and upgrades, yard and overland conveyors, loop take-ups, bins & hoppers, ore receival & crushing, feed systems, sizing systems, mining development, general infrastructure, grain silo conveyors, etc. Work performed has included extensive experience with underground conveyors and general mining equipment, as well as major rolling stock upgrades and other specialised vehicles & equipment.
Full materials handling maintenance and management contract services have also been provided very successfully. Autonomous maintenance management of select or complete materials handling and processing systems can be offered to reduce overall operating and whole of life costs.
Due to the extensive experience of Calsun's principals, fast reliable performance is ensured whilst minimising overheads and providing the most economical outcome at all times. All QA systems and documentation necessary for the proper and effective carrying out of the offered projects and services efficiently and safely are in place.
